Barb Noren, of the highly-recommended YouTube maker channel, Barb Makes Things, has a fun and easy new project video. In it, she turns a Rainbow Dash My Little Pony toy into Rainbow Flux, the soldering unicorn.
This is the 3rd soldering unicorn Barb has made. The first, Sparkles, the soldering unicorn at CRASH Space, has ended up being something of a mascot for that age-old hackerspace. Barb also made one at the request of her mom.
In this video, Barb does some severe trepantion on Rainbow Dash’s head to accept the soldering iron and she reduces an iron to fit inside the body of the toy. Everything looks really easy and workable for anybody with even one of the most fundamental soldering and rotary tooling abilities.
All fun and frivolity aside, I’m sort of fascinated by the idea of a soldering iron that can be fixed which you bring the work to. Not sure how beneficial this could be, however then, I never ever would’ve considered a soldering iron unicorn, either.
Mike Hutchinson developed a screw-together box that appears like a 4X Oreo cookie (of the Double Stuf variety). He printed it on a 3D printer and it looks excellent! Here’s the Thingiverse model.
Daren Schwenke’s 3D printed flowering increased embeds a capacitive touch sensor– a magnetic wire– in among the leaves, which journeys an Arduino-controlled actuator that changes the rose’s lighting and causes the petals– 3D printed and after that shaped over a hot chandelier bulb– to splay open or fold closed.

It’s based upon the initial 1967 Dübreq Stylophone, a small synthesizer played by touching a built-in stylus to the metal keyboard. The Stylophone was notoriously used on David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Kraftwerk’s “Pocket Calculator.” From Jacobs’ […]
